When was the last time you read a novel?
Not a book about social media, history, or email marketing? A simple work of fiction.
Until the past couple of weeks, my answer to you would have been, “At least a couple of years.” And that’s crazy, because I forgot how refreshing reading fiction can be.
Two nights ago, I finished my fiction book of the last couple of years, and instead of picking up a business or media book, I’m grabbing a four-book series to begin. I haven’t read this well in a long time.
Here’s why I think fiction is important:
- Prevents burnout. Let’s face it. No one can only read about one topic for days and years on end. Especially not if they’re even remotely creative (a level at which I claim to be at the least). And reading fiction allows your mind to relax and escape the day-to-day doldrums.
- Changes your perspective. By escaping to a fantasy world (or simply an alternate reality), you allow yourself to learn things from a different perspective. For example, the book I just finished had a heavy emphasis on political posturing and power-grabbing, something that I saw to be a bit allegorical to present (and past).
- Stretches your creativity and improves your writing. If you’re a writer–or trying to become one–fiction can teach you a lot about style, presentation, and creativity. Professional books can adopt a similar tone across the board, whereas fiction can run the gamut.
So next time you’re looking for a book to read (in print, or on your iPad), think fiction.
It’ll do you wonders.

I’ve actually read about fifty or so novels this year…sitting on a train for 2.5 hours a day definitely allows for me to have the opportunity. It is definitely an escape…and a much needed one after some rough days.
George: If I had a similar commute (by train rather than by car), I’d be in the same boat. But it’s also great not to spend your whole time on business books. I’m glad to hear you’ve read a bunch of novels this year. Looks like I’ve got some catching up to do!
