Yesterday, my daughter Nora turned…er… became(?) 2 months old. Hard to believe it’s been two months since she was born. It’s been so fast that the holidays have been a blur. (And from what I’m told, it doesn’t ever slow down again. 2010 could be the fastest year ever if that’s the case.)
Nora had her 2-month baby appointment (with the requisite shots, naturally) today. Here’s the update on her growth to date:
- Weight: 10 lbs 12 oz (normal weight, a full 3+ pounds from birth)
- Height: 23.25 inches (95th percentile – TALL – a full 3 inches longer than at birth)
- Everything else: Normal
Basically, she’s healthy, and that’s awesome. Particularly since I’m still battling remnants of the cold I’ve had for the past 2+ weeks, I’ll take it. Any day.

What have I learned this month?
- Learning her cries. This is a big deal. Nora has very distinct styles of crying: one for hunger, one for gas, and (as of today) one for pain caused by shots. Once I learned what her cries meant, life became a hair easier.
- I better not get sick again until she’s older. My patience, I learned, is virtually zero when I’m sick. And I don’t get sick very often, but when I do, it lingers. My wife was a champ for a solid two weeks because of a nasty cough I had (that I’m still fighting today).
- This may be the most important thing, but every baby is different. Everyone has their ideas of what works and what doesn’t. But every baby is different. And that’s my advice to those who are about to become fathers (DJ Waldow). Realize that no matter what people tell you, or what you read, that ultimately you’ll still have to learn what works for your kids… and unfortunately that means you’re tackling a constantly moving target.
- And I forget the other thing I was going to say. Guess I have to get used to never remembering anything. Probably why it’s a good thing I finally discovered Evernote today. Installed it on all of my computers plus my iPod touch. And they sync. That’s pretty sweet. (And no, I’m NOT a paid endorser… though I’m open for suggestion.)
As we enter the third month, my wife “goes back to work,” which will be an adjustment, even if she’s changed her mind and will be working part-time from home. On the bright side, no daycare, which is a big deal for us.
That’s about it. Till next month!

Love it. We’re still a few months out and I already feel “better”-prepared.

DJ: Glad to help. Just know this. No matter how “prepared” you think you’ll be, you won’t be. When I held Nora for the first time, three thoughts ran through my head:
1. Holy crap, this is amazing.
2. Holy crap, she’s beautiful.
3. Holy crap, I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. Are they going to let me take her home?
