The Nora Chronicles: The First Month

First Thanksgiving with the little one

First Thanksgiving with the little one

Small victories and survival.

As my daughter has reached the “One-Month-Old” status, that’s the best way I can describe what the last 30-odd days have been like.

Two nights ago, Nora had her best night ever–ironically only her 2nd night in the crib–when she slept (with only a few feeding breaks) for almost 10 hours straight. Both my wife and I slept wonderfully and were quite refreshed that day. Small victory.

Contrast that with the nights we spend hours holding her or having her in the bed next to us to make sure she sleeps calmly (and gets us some sleep, too)… Survival.

For every day that she’s calm and happy and gives us great joy, there’s a day where she tries our patience. But anytime she lets out a big yawn that ends with a grunt-like sigh, it just kills me (in a good way).

The first month is over. I’ve gone back to work (as tough and weird as that was, admittedly). My wife’s been home recovering nicely and taking great care of the Little One.

The Little One is doing great. She’s probably at least 8.5 pounds by now and has grown at least an inch already–meaning she’ll be tall like her daddy (and mama). She’s starting to figure out her eyes and her movements, pawing at my goatee pretty much every time I hold her with fascination and interest. She’s gotten through a few baths without crying (again, small victories), and is beginning to gain control of her large (of course for the body) head.

Beyond what I consider the norm in terms of exhaustion, dealing with crying, etc., no complaints so far. A first Christmas coming up though. Could be a pretty interesting month.

Can’t wait until she can smile and truly interact with us. Maybe in next month’s update.

DJ,

Thanks for reading! I’d love to write for Dad-O-Matic. Just have to see if I can get back in the blogging groove. Been a tough few weeks trying to wrap the brain around writing.

You’ll be in this position soon enough.
