Bumper Sticker Theory

BumperStickerCarI have a long commute–roughly 75 miles round trip each day. Therefore, I spend a lot of my time during the week in my car… a lot. Therefore (again), I see a lot of cars every day.

This kind of commute means I also see a lot of bumper stickers. Some are entertaining, some are downright idiotic, and some are just plain sad (like the Kerry/Edwards 2004 bumper stickers I see. This is Utah; talk about a lost cause).

Over the years (because I’m “so old,”) I’ve been in development of a theory about bumper stickers. I think I’m finally ready to come with it:

The more bumper stickers you have on your car, the worse the condition of your car.

It’s an inverse relationship. A nicer (in cost or condition) car is less likely to have bumper stickers on it. Maybe it’s a red state thing–and since I’ve never had the pleasure of living in a blue state–but I haven’t typically seen Lexuses, Mercedes, or BMWs with bumper stickers on them. Just don’t.

But you get a crappy ’83 Mercury Pacer hatchback on the road, watch out for bumper stickers.

One notable exception: Subarus.

Not sure why this is, but Subaru drivers seem to be the exception to my rule. A few mornings ago, I was behind a later model Outback who had bumper stickers all over it. In the lane next to this Outback, another later model Outback, also with bumper stickers. Any ideas about that one?

What do you think? What are your theories, bumper stickers or whatever?
