The next series of posts began as a somewhat heated discussion on Twitter between myself, @andrewkordek, @LorenMcDonald, @DaveMcCue, @djwaldow, @jacaldwell, and a few others. It all started with the start of a new hashtag:
#emailsnob
Then started the debate as follows about what certain words in email marketing mean:
- scottcohen13: @LorenMcDonald Language is everything in #emailmarketing IMHO. It’s about communication. It’s about being real. #emailsnob
- andrewkordek:@scottcohen13 right…so does BLAST really mean anything or is it like I want a coke…but I really mean a Pepsi
- djwaldow: @LorenMcDonald I’m gonna agree w/ @andrewkordek on this one. I think we care, but not sure if others do. It’s just a word, right? #emailsnob
- LorenMcDonald:@djwaldow @scottcohen13 @andrewkordek that’s my point (gonna blog on it at some point) Does saying “blast” perpetuate that is is OK 2 blast?
- andrewkordek:@scottcohen13 @DaveMcCue I HATE the word BLAST..but what I am saying is does it really mean that you dont care about relevance?
- scottcohen13: @andrewkordek meaning we care enough not to use terminology that de-humanizes email. That’s why I say language is everything.
- scottcohen13: @andrewkordek Maybe not. But the fact people are still using BLAST means we’re not educating email marketers enough, right @LorenMcDonald?
- djwaldow: Agree w/ @scottcohen13 on this one http://idek.net/RPH would love to hear thoughts by @andrewkordek @LorenMcDonald @RetailEmailBlog too
- scottcohen13: @LorenMcDonald @djwaldow @andrewkordek @jacaldwell We need 2 collaborate on blog post about “The Bad Words of Email Marketing.” Thoughts?
- djwaldow: @scottcohen13 @LorenMcDonald @andrewkordek @jacaldwell blog post abt “EM Mktg Bad Words?” Me = all in
- LorenMcDonald: @scottcohen13: @LorenMcDonald @djwaldow @andrewkordek @jacaldwell I tackled 3 here – – & of course buy today http://bit.ly/enirl
- jacaldwell: RT @djwaldow: @scottcohen13 @LorenMcDonald @andrewkordek @jacaldwell blog post abt “EM Mktg Bad Words?” Me = all in (jac: ditto)
So there’s the back story to what I’ve decided to turn into a series. Each post through this series will feature one “naughty word” in email marketing, my opinions on the word and its negative connotations, and opinions from the “specialists” in email marketing.
If you’d like to chime in, hit me up in comments or on Twitter at www.twitter.com/scottcohen13.
The first naughty word of email marketing I’ll tackle likely tomorrow morning:
BLAST!
